This 1970 novel is the first full novel in the ConSentiency universe, which up to this point consisted of only two short stories. Sorry sci-fi dudebros, i'm ruining this genre with calling this "big" and "MANLY" genre adorable. By the end of "Whipping Star," while I felt less lost, I still didn't get the impression I really grasped what the heck was happening in this story. Wait, the list is getting too long. One of my few Desert Island books, along with Samuel Delany's Driftglass and Jack Williamson's Seedling Stars, LOTR, anything by Barbara Tuchman, Winston Churchill, Oliver Sacks. Whipping Star is one of Frank Herbert’s non-Dune books that Tor has been reprinting in recent years. Also, I continue my leisurely effort to remember and/or explore Frank Herbert's non-Dune books.I picked this from the shelves on impulse. Abnethe's wealth provides the best tutors in exchange for Fannie Mae's agreement to take the whippings. This book probably only deserves one star. A page turner from start to finish, Whipping Star condenses the herbert experience into a tight, well-implemented package.
It would be interesting to get into his works out of Dune beacuse that was long and tiring after a while, so i might look into his other books when the library re-opens.

Calebans have great difficulty understanding and communicating with the more limited species of the ConSentiency (and vice versa), but Fannie Mae is curious. This sentient being has entered into a binding contract with a woman in order to learn about life in our dimension. The main character is a hard-boiled type, but he works for the bureau of sabotage, which does all it can to keep the governments on their toes--an interesting premise. If so, the humor part mostly passed me by.

I'm stifling laughter (badly) with every keystroke of this summary. This one could almost have been re-written as an episode of “Star Trek: The Animated Series,” without any serious changes in the plot, just by toning down the kinkiness of the “whipping” part of the story. This is an odd book, even for Frank Herbert, which is not to say I didn't like it. It's really bad in some respects and pretty much the paragon of bad science fiction. Overall, a decent to good story and some very good writing, especially in the conversations between the human and alien characters. It is up to intersteller saboteurs to stop her... Yeah, it's a damned weird book. The attraction of SF books is that they are like telescopes, looking at some point into the far future. Like these short stories, Whipping Star features the unusually observant BuSab agent Jorj X. McKie as a main character. Whipping Star (ConSentiency Universe #1) Suddenly - the end of all life throughout the entire Galaxy!

The way the main "alien" species communicates with the other sentients of Herbert's worlds makes for a lot of hilarious, sometimes grimly so, miscommunication.

Whipping Star is an interesting introduction to some of the background to the world of the Dosadi Experiment, and the universe of creatures that populate it. What truly is pain? Until this summer, Lindsay Ellis was mainly known as a super smart and witty film critic and YouTube essayist, making videos that range from a ...Suddenly - the end of all life throughout the entire Galaxy! But it is, tho.

It was only weeks away, or days - or even hours. How and why this is going to happen is unclear, but the protagonist, Jorj X. McKie, an agent of the Bureau of Sabotage, is pretty convinced of it. The title "Whipping Star", I thought, was going to have some fascinating metaphorical meaning, but nope, it actually involves someone using a leather whip on a shining bright ball of gas in space.

In a universe made smaller by instantaneous travel, a mystery unfolds as the creatures who make such travel possible are disappearing.

by Berkley [BuSab "sabotages" the crime by helping the victim become healthy [The Calebian's room is hot because, well, it's a star! McGie uncovers a plot to kill the last Caleban which would trigger the "discontinuity" of all thinking beings (sentients) who have used the services of the Calebans. They aren't hemmed in by the here and now, instead, in that tiny piece of glass at the very end, you get to see myriad possibilities tinted with a hint of reality, with some futures, of course, being far more realistic than others.

I Whipping Star is a life or death struggle to answer these questions and more. The "chairdog" mentioned on page 67 is also mentioned in multiple "Dune" novels; both the original series by Frank Herbert as well as the extended series by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson. Both of them are contained in the collection Eye and may very well be included in other short fiction collections. It is a story of some very alien aliens and the communication difficulties that difference can create.

I'm going to have to get the book out so I can write some of those quotes down.A masterpiece of a short book. Start by marking “Whipping Star (ConSentiency Universe, #1)” as Want to Read: As each Caleban exits, millions of the ConSentiency are killed or rendered insane.
