Dracula fans may also enjoy it. Professor Van Helsing has long secured his reputation as a supernatural detective and the nemesis of Count Dracula, but what of the role played by the great Sherlock Holmes? I think the combination also works well here because Watson is revealing a previously unknown aspect of the original Dracula and because the sort of horror Dracula represents mixes well with the Holmesian necessity of always getting the bad guy and solving the problem - or at least having a good chance of doing so. I also appreciate that Estleman does a great job of capturing Arthur Conan Doyle's writing style, as well as portraying Holmes and Watson in such a way that it really feels like this could be part of the original canon. ‘It is the devil.’She then tutted to Dracula: ‘the bats are a little noisy, would you mind?’‘This is exciting! The type of Dracula they wanted was…Sherlock. Who was really behind the murders that would have every man in England whispering 'vampire' for years to come?

And the last sixty pages or so really gripped me. The coolest book I've ever read. When a schooner arrives in Whitby with all hands missing bar the dead captain amidst reports of a wild dog being seen leaving the vessel, a journalist calls on Sherlock Holmes to investigate.I'm usually not interested in remakes/adaptations of this sort, but Estleman's This is the second book about Holmes and Dracula I've read, and unlike Fred Saberhagen's attempt, Estleman does an excellent job of making the two characters and their worlds work together. I found this much more satisfying that the sprawling REVENGE OF THE HOUND I read recently, because the focus remained tight and the stakes clear.

The two characters were basically fictional contemporaries, as far as that goes. An educated woman in a crucifix!’When Dracula emerged from the beast’s body he tried to rile her, mocking her defence plan: ‘your Army of the Faithful can’t look me in the eye.’ ‘You’re naked and they’re nuns,’ she observed simply. The seed of this book was, what if Sherlock Holmes and Dracula had met as adversaries in 1890? Even more surprisingly, he then walked away –because she had told him: ‘you’re not welcome here. The author takes this idea to the extreme by thanking Watson in his "author's acknowledgements" and I just happen to find that trail of thought a bit irksome. This was a fun way to spend some time. It makes sense as the two characters are pretty much contemporaries, and the settings always were similar anyway. The Count was merely Moriarty with fangs and his perennial nemesis Van Helsing their new Holmes, only with a bag full of metal stakes and a cross (and God). The two were locked in a battle of wits, in both senses - as you’d expect with Moffat and Gatiss.Opinion: The start of their three-part adaptation was like a compilation of the genre through the ages - a vampires’ Greatest Hits, Best of The Count, or Tribute to TransylvaniaLike any fight between the forces of Good and Evil these days, it was no longer enough for the hero and villain to just try and defeat their (seemingly indestructible) adversary. They had to match them when it came to amusing one-liners, clever quips, and camp comments too.At the end of this, the first round, I made the score a draw, although Dracula certainly won the last category.Bursting from the body of a black dog/wolf after a spot of shape-shifting, he quipped to the Mother Superior and the Sisters: ‘I don’t know about you girls but I do love a bit of fur!’‘You’re a monster!’ wailed Jonathan Harker when he saw the vampire for what he was.Thoughts: Dracula is a cross between the modern horror of flesh-eating extravaganzas True Blood, Hannibal, and The Walking Dead and the old-fashioned camp of 1970s/80s parodies‘And you’re a lawyer. Once you get past the fascinating premise of the story it becomes slightly disappointing.

When Sherlock Holmes acquires the fabled 'Dracula Papers', the stage is set for the greatest battle of wits since Reichenbach. That makes me willing to give new slants on classics a chance before slamming a book shut or shutting a movie off.I am not usually a fan of classic movie remakes or books "based on the original.'' Light and fun, with plenty of atmosphere, Estleman has written a book which has great appeal to the aforementioned group, and young adults. However, Holmes and Watson deal with vampires the same way they deal with everything else - only accepting the idea when all other options have been eliminated and when they see the evidence themselves.
