The History Centre contains a comprehensive archive of Walcha family history documents, index cards, some birth, death and marriage records, photographs, and a research library relating to residents of Walcha and the surrounding district from the 1830’s.The Centre is situated in the back room of the Walcha District Library, at 42n Derby Street. The adjacent room contains a selection of Aboriginal artefacts, and a set of convict leg-irons and handcuffs. The reconstructed Blacksmiths Shop displays a forge, bellows and many original artefacts of the old age occupation, with Walcha once being the home to four blacksmiths shops.The Plane Hanger houses the Tiger Moth Aeroplane used in 1950 to spread super phosphate for the first time in Australia, on the local property “Mirani”, then owned by AS Nivison.Walcha is located half way between Sydney and Brisbane on the crossroads of the Oxley Highway and Thunderbolts Way. The Rainbow Serpent is said to travel underground from the base of the falls to reappear 20 km upstream at the Mill Hole on the Apsley River in Walcha. An Aboriginal presence in the Djangadi lands has been attested archaeologically to go back at least 4,000 years, according to the analysis of the materials excavated at the Clybucca midden, a site which the modern-day descendants of the Djangadi and Gumbaynggirr claim territory.
